RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MAY 6, 2020 AS SAN DIEGO COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS' MEMORIAL DAY AND MAY 10-16, 2020 AS NATIONAL POLICE WEEK

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Law enforcement officers are the guardians of life and property, defenders of the individual right to be free, and warriors in the battle against crime. These dedicated women and men who have chosen law enforcement as a career face extraordinary risk and danger in preserving our freedom and security.
In May of each year National Police Week is observed throughout the nation in order to recognize the hazardous work, serious responsibilities and strong commitment to our nation's peace officers. In conjunction with National Police Week, this year, May 6th is recognized as San Diego Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial Day in commemoration of those officers who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. These special observances provide an opportunity for the community to acknowledge the heroic women and men who have dedicated their lives to safeguarding public safety and to honor the men and women who have given their lives while fulfilling this commitment to the citizens of San Diego County.

DISCUSSION:
Established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy and a joint resolution of Congress, National Police Week pays special tribute to those law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
